Asian Biblical Hermeneutics and Postcolonialism
Contesting the Interpretations
By R.S. Sugirtharajah
PhP 329
Category: Scripture
R.S. Sugirtharajah, takes up the theory of postcolonialism
as a way of looking at biblical interpretative practices in the Asian
context. Postcolonialism is a discourse of resistance that tries to
"write back" and work against colonial assumptions and ideologies.
Long established in cultural studies, this is the first work to apply
postcolonial theory to biblical interpretation. Sugirtharajah provides
examples of how Asian Christians have used both indigenous and western
critical methods to liberate the texts, and highlights the liberating
potential of other sacred texts of Asia to meet the pressing problems
of the continent.

Go Preach! Mark's
Kingdom Message and the Black Church Today
by Brian K. Blount
300 pp., PhP 359
Category: Pastoral Ministry
Connecting the apocalyptic message of Mark's Gospel
to principles and programs of socio-cultural transformation in the life
of the Black church today, Blount begins his study of Mark by examining
the social significance of Jesus' proclamation of the coming Kingdom
of God. Through Jesus, God's future power broke through to the human
present. This experience of the Kingdom empowered the disciples to "go
preach" the Kingdom message in word and deed, to finish the story
that Mark's narration about Jesus began.
Blount compares the situation of today's Black church
to the situation in which the Gospel arose and explores the implications
of apocalyptic theology for the pastoral mission of the Black church.
He demonstrates the value of a sociolinguistic approach to the scripture,
both in interpreting the text in its original context and in unpacking
its meaning for today

Mission and Catechesis
Alexander de Rhodes & Inculturation in Seventeenth - Century Vietnam
By Peter C. Phan
Hb, PhP 429
Category: Catechism / Pastoral Ministry
This book carries the deceptively simple title Mission
and Catechesis, but holds a remarkable trove of information and reflection.
It is about the 17th century apostle to Vietnam, Alexander de Rhodes,
S.J.,
Not only can he be considered the founder of the church
in what is now Vietnam
.. he adapted the form of the Christian
message to Vietnamese culture in such a way that Christianity was able
to enter more fully into Vietnamese culture.
Peter Phan has done us all a service by presenting the
life and work of this man, delving into archival resources hitherto
unminded for this intriguing story. Alongside this
.he gives us
also the first translation of de Rhode's most important work, the Cathechismus,
through which he evangelized Vietnam
.
For historians Phan has presented the life and work
of a missionary who deserves to be better known. For theologians he
offers significant insights into the presentation of Christian faith.
For students of Vietnamese history and culture he makes
available a significant text that has influenced the development of
Vietnam
this work is exemplary of what missiological study can
be at its best: allowing a greater appreciating of the past, raising
important questions for missionary practice in the present, and enhancing
the cultural sphere in which missionary activity takes place.
-From the Foreword by Robert J. Schreiter, C.PP.S.

The Papacy and the People of God
Edited by Gary MacEoin
176 pp., PhP 239
Category: Pastoral Ministry
At the dawn of a new millennium, ten of the world's
leading theologians and Vatican watchers ponder the future shape of
the papacy. Pope John Paul Ii himself invited such reflections when,
in his encyclical Ut unum sint, he said the church should search "for
a manner of exercising the primacy that would be open to a new situation."
The Papacy and the People of God I explores a range of issues including
the history and theology of papal primacy, infallibility, the magisterium,
papal elections, the relationship of the papacy to a thoroughly indigenous
church, and the role of the papacy in an ecumenical church of the future.

Pastoral Counseling in a Global Church:
Voices from the Field
Edited by Robert J. Wicks and Barry K. Estadt,
178 pp., PhP 299
Category: Pastoral Ministry
Pastoral counseling is one of the fastest growing ministry
specialties in the emerging world church. Pastoral Counseling in a Global
Church vividly presents the experiences of people involved in ministry
in different cultures, in Asia, Africa, and Latin America as well as
Europe and Australia. Its practical, narrative-style approach complements
more theoretical treatments of cross-cultural counseling.
In our increasingly global and multicultural world, sensitivity to the
ways in which families and cultures are central to growth in Christian
life is essential for pastoral counselors. This is especially true since,
in many cultures, the pastoral minister is the first one people turn
to for help, before mental health or other professionals. Those who
can apply culturally - relevant and sensitive pastoral skills can provide
real help to those in need: whether in a multicultural parish in North
America, or anywhere in the world.

Pastoral Theology from a Global Perspective:
A Case Method Approach
by H. S. Wilson, Judo Poerwowidagdo, Takatso Mofokeng, Robert Evans, Alice
Evans
246 pp. PhP 349
Category: Pastoral Ministry
Multi-cultural and global in design, Pastoral Theology
from a Global Perspective brings concrete and applicable resources to
Christian leaders around the world who are struggling with problems
of pastoral care.
This practical, easy-to-use approach to pastoral theology
is designed to hone pastoral skills in five central areas:
· The role of women in church and society
· Empowering marginalized people
· Economic justice and ecology
· Reconciliation and peacemaking
· Caring for human needs
Fifteen case studies, accompanied by teaching notes
and commentaries, illustrate the diversity and commonalities of pastoral
care in different parts of the world: an ordained Indian woman assigned
as an associate pastor is threatened by male church members who say
she is not permitted to preach from the pulpit or serve the Eucharist;
missionaries to Haiti face critical decisions about supplying chemical
fertilizer to a destitute hillside village; a Hispanic community considers
illegally occupying a government nature reserve to save their community
sheep herd; an Ugandan pastor deals with violence and healing in a community
struggling to recover from civil war.

and harmony. The Tao Te Ching: And the Christian Way is a fresh interpretation
