Parables for Preachers
By Barbara E. Reid, OP

The parables of Jesus are puzzling sayings and stories with world-transforming potential. Parables for Preachers, with separate volumes for the three liturgical cycles, offers an understanding of how parables work and a fresh variety of possible meanings not only for Jesus' original audience or even for the early Christians for whom Matthew, Mark, and Luke wrote but also for contemporary Christians.

The purpose behind Reid's work is two-fold. First, to aid preachers by bringing together current biblical research on the parables in the hope that it will open up new vistas of meaning and help spark their creativity. Second, she offers an understanding of how parables communicate, and invites preachers to try out the parabolic techniques of preaching.

Parables for Preacher is not only for preachers, but for all who are interested in a deeper understanding of parables, particularly teachers, catechists, liturgy planners, and members of groups for homily preparation, Bible study, or faith sharing.

Pierse integrates the richness of the word of God with experiences and stories from life in the community. He shows how through silence, the word can bear fruit in service and sacrament.” (R. J.
