3rd Week in Ordinary Time
1st
Reading: Heb 10:19-25
Gospel: Mk 4:21-25
Jesus
also said to the crowd, "When the light comes, is it to be put
under a tub or a bed? Surely it is put on a lampstand. Whatever is hidden
will be disclosed, and whatever is kept secret will be brought to light.
Listen then, if you have ears!"
And
he also said to them, "Pay attention to what you hear. In the measure
you give, so shall you receive and still more will be given to you.
For to the one who produces something, more will be given, and from
him who does not produce anything, even what he has will be taken away
from him."
Gospel
Commentary
How
does one react to Jesus' affirmation that "whatever is hidden will
be disclosed, and whatever is kept secret will be brought to light"?
It depends, to a large extent, on what is hidden and secret in one's
life. If one seeks to live in as transparent a manner as possible, with
as much as integrity and as little double-dealing as possible, then
these words come as consolation. If, like Adam and Eve hiding in the
garden, there is a darkness in our lives, and deeds that we hide or
deceive others about, then Jesus' words about the truth that cannot
be concealed forever come as fearful threat. What is the truth of my
life? Am I being called to live more and more in the light?
