St. Joachim & Anne
1st Reading: Sir 44:1, 10-15

Gospel: Mt 13:16-17

Jesus said to his disciples, "Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears, because they hear.
For I tell you that many prophets and upright people would have longed to see the things you hear, but they did not hear it."

Commentary

Tradition names the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus - Grandpa Joachim and Granny Anne. Here we see God's humanity; he was born in a real family and grew up not only as a son but as a grandson as well.
Isn't it nice to imagine Jesus on the shoulders of Grandpa Joachim, or Jesus being cuddled by his Granny? Or when scolded by Mary or Joseph, Jesus could have turned to his grandparents for more understanding and attention. And what about his grandparents on Joseph's side?
Grandparents almost always tend to spoil their grandchildren, which could also have been the case with Joachim and Anne. But it is also from our grandparents that we are introduced to the wisdom that experience teaches.
Joachim and Anne help us to reflect more on the humanity of God.
