Represents a lifetime of thought, bible study, missionary experience, and missiologically teaching by one of the premier missiologists of the last half of the century. During the past fifty years, there have been few works that have dealt in-dept with a missional reading of the Bible. Yet of those that do exist, in many cases the biblical analysis has been done by Bible scholars with little background in missiological thought or praxis. In other cases missiologists with little background in biblical studies have tried to derive biblical foundations for their missionary perspective. In this volume Arthur Glasser uniquely couples a careful and in-dept approach to the Bible with a broad understanding of missiological reflection and missionary action. The purpose of this book is to offer the reader a biblical study of the Kingdom of God and the worldwide mission of God's people. One of the most basic aspects of mission theology has to do with the relation of the Bible to mission theory and practice. Initially one would think that this would be obvious. Such is not the case. In each generation there is a need to reflect again on the way the church embraces or exploits the scriptureal understanding of mission. (Preface) Announcing the Kingdom takes the reader on a panoramic tour of the Kingdom of God from Genesis to Revelation. A theology of mission centered on the Kingdom, it intersects biblical exegesis with missiological reflection to produce a solidly evangelical and relevant understanding of mission for Christians who want to share the good news in today's trouble world." Gary
B. McGee, Assemblies of God "In
an age when theologies of mission can be reductionistic in focus and concern,
Glasser expounds the biblical revelation with detail and diligence. Announcing
the Kingdom analyzes the Kingdom theme from Genesis to Revelation and
along the way engages other issues of importance in contemporary debate,
such as the centrality of social justice to holistic mission, the question
of Jewish evangelization, and the fate of those who do not believe. This
volume is a testament to a significant career and a rich foundation for
continuing reflection on Christian mission." M.
Daniel Carroll R., "Announcing
the Kingdom challenges biblically scholars to look outwardly and to think
missionally and challenges missiologists to base theory and experience
in exegesis and biblical theology. While one may not agree with every
detail of this theological reconstruction, all will profit immensely from
the careful attention given to the biblical text in understanding the
central place that mission plays in God's historical plan of establishing
the Kingdom of God. This work will be use with great profit in biblical
theology as well as missiology courses." Michael

Asian
Christian Theologies During the last twenty years our knowledge of Asian Christian theologies and of their extensive written sources, has greatly increased, as has the number of those studying and teaching such theologies. There has been, however, no attempt as yet to provide an Asia-wide and comprehensive guide to study or research in these theologies. This volume is the first of the three which provides the first ecumenical, and fully representative guide to research in the authors, movements and sources for contextual Asian Christian theologies from the 7th to the 20th centuries. The central focus is therefore upon theological reflection which has arisen from the faith experience of Christians within the particular histories and cultures of the region's peoples and which has been shaped and resourced by such contexts. |

Becoming
Local Church The Asian
Bishops have boldly stated: "If the Asian Churches do not discover
their own identity, they will have no future." This challenge calls
"on the part of the Churches for originality, creativity and inventiveness,
for boldness and courage." Yes, the Churches of Asia In response
to the Asian Bishops' statements, this book explores five aspects of "becoming
local church": history, theology, evangelization, dialogue, and paschal
reflections. In brief, it |

What is Catholicism? And where is the Catholic Church headed in the third millennium? These two questions provide the structure for Thomas Rauschs Catholicism in the Third Millennium. Here Rausch combines a faithful presentation of the tradition with a critical theological reflection and interpretation of where the Church is today and where it might be moving. Catholicism in the Third Millennium offers an appreciation of the forces and movements that have shaped, and continue to influence, the ongoing change and development of Roman Catholicism. Chief among these is the influence of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) in reshaping Catholicism. This revised edition includes updated text from Rauschs Catholicism at the Dawn of the Third Millennium particularly the final chapter on The Unfinished Agenda of Vatican II. Each chapter concludes with focus questions developed by Catherine E. Clifford of St. Pauls University, Ottawa. This experience of guided reading provides readers with a broad survey of Roman Catholic faith and practice in its contemporary context. |

"A remarkable and comprehensive book on the history and theology of mission... Readers will discover that the six constants of mission that Bevans and Schroeder distill from the ever-changing historical and cultural contexts of mission are sign posts for articulating a contemporary theology of mission that is both rooted in context and faithful to the Christian tradition." - Jose M. de Mesa, De La Salle University, Philippines - "A masterpiece that situates the theology of mission within a global history of church mission... Meticulously researched, comprehensive in scope, and stylistic accessible, this book is required reading for every ministerial student of all denominations who will have to do ministry in an increasingly pluraslistic world." - Peter C. Phan, Georgetown University. |

In 1998, describing the theology emerging from the Philippines, Karl Gaspar wrote: "Do not look for a book. There isn't one; and none may be written soon". He then qualified the statement, "this new theology has been communicated in another language" and if one is to understand the theology of struggle one needs to look at "culture and liturgy" (Gaspar, 1988:45). This book delves into this very topic - the theology of struggle. It plunges far deeper than theological reflections and oral representations available. It goes to the source of what became known as the theology of struggle - it goes to the very people themselves. It journeys with these progressive Christians as they discover a new way of life, a new way of 'being' church. It travels with them from early days of transformation, watches as some lose their all-important Christian identity, reports the moment when they claim their place in Philippine history, and remains with those who continue to struggle to this day. It reports crucial incidents, reveals the dangers and frustrations faced, but never loses hope. Indeed, this is not a theological text, despite its name. It is a book about a courageous group of men and women - church people from diverse backgrounds - who joined the revolutionary struggle in the Philippines. "Imagine
a book that is at once a source of profound wisdom, a systematic presentation
of a moral and ethical tradition, and a page turner'! This is what James
Keenan's Moral Wisdom turns out to be. There is nothing facile about this
volume. Nothing superficial, nothing manipulative. It weaves together
autobiography, the stories of others, interpretation of biblical and theological
texts, and a deep understanding of what morality is and what the Roman
Catholic tradition of moral theology has been and can be when it is as
its best. MARGARET
A. FARLEY "Moral wisdom is hard to come by because it is so complex. Most of us strive for moral wisdom throughout our lives but never totally attain it. In this book, James F. Keenan Skillfully brings together deep theological knowledge, historical lessons, acute pastoral sensitivity, broad spiritual experiences, and true prudence in proposing moral wisdom for Christian life and spirituality today." CHARLES
E. CURRAN JAMES F. KENNAN, S.J., is professor of moral theology and director of the doctoral program of Western Jesuit School of Theology. His other books with Claretian Publications are: Commandments of Compassion, Catholic Ethicists on HIV/AIDS prevention, and Virtues for Ordinary Christian. |

Theology for Teachers is a book for anyone interested in a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the Catholic faith. It is ideal for those who are preparing to teach in Catholic schools, as it fills the need for a basic text suited to the curriculum guideline of the Institute for Catholic Education for university courses in religious education. This book is divided into five sections: Principles of Faith and Faith Growth; An Introduction to the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures; Ecclesilogy and Sacrament; Morality, Sin and Reconciliation; and The Last Things (Death and Beyond). This revised edition makes frequent references to numerous sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was not available in English when the two previous editions were published. The frequent footnote references, suggestions for further reading, glossary and index make this work a valuable resource in religious education. All readers will benefit form the author's down-to-earth relating of theology to faith life. According to the author, "We do not study the theology for its own sake; we study it that it may affect our daily life and bring us closer to the living God." Ian Knox was a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost (Spiritans) and held a Ph.D in religious education from the University of Notre Dame. He was Special Lecturer in Theology and Religious Education at the University of St. Michael's College in Toronto, and served as a consultant to the Catholic Office of Religious Education of the Archdiocese of Toronto. "With this 'final' edition of Theology for Teachers, Ian Knox leaves a rich legacy to the people he loved most and served best - religious educators. Written with an engaging style, Ian's text makes accessible the best of Catholic theology with a view to teaching it and nurturing the faith life of the teacher as well". Those who are familiar with college students are easily aware of the lack of understanding these young people have regarding religious matters. This ignorance is noticeable among those whom one would expect to have cleared ideas about religion because of its affinity to their culture as well as to their extensive education in other fields. More often than not, this is also very characteristic of those who profess themselves as Christians. This book, subtitled, Theology for College Students, presents with absolute urgency - while maintaining clarity and a sound writing style - the basic truths of the Christian Faith. It challenges and reserves the common misconception that knowledge of religious matters is boring, unintelligible, and irrelevant for people of this day and age. Those who seek to be well- informed about Christianity will find in this book the necessary elements for an updated knowledge. And those who look for a deeper understanding of their faith will find guides and abundant bibliography to enrich and deepen their search. After reading the book, readers will find themselves not only with a greater knowledge, but also with the satisfaction of having gone over a work well-written by a theologian, teacher, and college professor. Who Is Jesus? "In a clear and accessible style, Thomas Rausch offers a judicious sifting of a wide variety of modern authors and ancients sources. His introduction' is comprehensive and coherent. It serves as an effective tool for those seeking to understand Christology both then and now." Michael
L. Cook, S.J. "Rausch has written a wonderfully clear, faithful, and reliable Christology in the light of contemporary scripture studies and the early tradition of the Church. Particularly helpful is his approach to the saving work of Christ in the light of the other recent christological studies. I recommend this volume to college and seminary professors as an excellent book that will guide their students through the complexities of Western Catholic reflection on the mystery of Jesus Christ." Worship In Worship Keith Pecklers aims to give theologians, liturgists, clergy and laity of all denominations a new sense of the theology of liturgy. From a historical / theological treatment of the evolution of Christian worship in the West, he addresses twentieth-century liturgical reforms and emphazes liturgy's role in the social and moral transformation of society. The social dimension of worship is further highlighted in chapters on popular religion and inculturation. Pecklers considers the future of Christian worship in light of a new sociological reality: the break up of the stable parish community; credible preaching within an increasingly secularized society; and the growing rift between conservatives and progressives who share membership in the same church. |
