Chronicles of Noah and Her Sisters, The
Genesis
and Exodus According to Women
By Miriam Therese Winter
152 pp, Paperback, PhP 50.00
Category: Spirituality
Re-imagined from a woman's perspective,
these familiar events delight the imagination and stir the soul in refreshing
new ways. Miriam Therese Winter retells our ancient myths of Creation,
the Garden, and the Flood, and chronicles the adventures of some of
the remarkable women of Genesis and Exodus: Sarah and Hagar, Rebekah,
Leah, Rachel, Miriam, and many more. According to the author, she is
presenting us with an ancient manuscript that was written long ago by
one of the many wives of Solomon. This woman writer, named Noah, feared
the loss of women's perspective as written records began replacing oral
traditions. She wrote these Chronicles to offer another side to the
story of our shared myths and memories. The Chronicles of Noah and Her
Sisters is wonderful spiritual reading, and a must for all women - and
men - concerned about handing on the essentials of faith to their daughters
and granddaughters.

Here Comes Everybody! Stories of Church
By Tim Unsworth
226 pp.,
PhP 50.00
Category: Pastoral
Ministry / Inspiration
Unsworth's essays about the Catholic church are almost Chaucerian, except
that the characters in his stories are not linked by a common earthly
journey. These portraits range from views of diocesan scandal to tales
of individual goodness to the exploits of a few sinners, as well. They'll
prove entertaining for religious-minded folk and those not involved
in Catholicism because they are stories about ordinary people, their
problems, and their poignant moments. As Unsworth says about Buddy Charles,
a saloon pianist who is also a father of four and a teacher, "He
just doesn't have the kind of faith that bores God." And Unsworth
just doesn't have the kind of religious writing that bores readers.
His humor and insight will have wide appeal.

I Am Your
Brother Joseph
Cardinal
Bernardin of Chicago
By Tim Unsworth
118 pp., Paperback PhP 50.00
Category:
Biography / Pastoral Ministry
One of the Greatest living theologians
speaks from his heart and his mind.
Hard on the heels of Cardinal
Bernardin's own moving memoir, The Gift of Peace (Loyola), comes this
anecdotal tribute to Chicago's beloved prelate. Unsworth, a columnist
for the National Catholic Reporter and a personal friend of Bernardin's,
sketches the life and, particularly, the very public death of the bishop
who took Chicago by storm in 1982 when he introduced himself to the
priests of his new archdiocese as "your brother Joseph." As
leader of America's second largest diocese, "Bernardin set an entirely
new style, one marked more by gentle leadership than feudal authority,"
says Unsworth, who admires the cardinal as fiercely as he deplores authoritarian
hierarchy. This passionate memoir might have gained coherence from more
editing, but nothing could improve Unsworth's exuberant storytelling,
already known to the readers of his previous books, for example Catholics
on the Edge and Here Comes Everybody! The portrait
that emerges here is of a prince of the church who, through prayer and
personal pain, learned to make humble personal ministry his priority.

Papal Primacy and the Episcopate
By Michael J. Buckley
172 pp., Paperback, PhP 50.00
Category: Religion / Church Ministry
Michael Buckley argues that a theology of papal primacy,
as opposed to an ideology, must focus on its nature as a unique relationship
whose term or purpose is the unity of bishops among themselves and through
them the unity of the entire Church.
Founded upon the sacramental life of the Church, upon
the specification to the see of Rome, and upon its exercise of a truly
Episcopal ministry, papal primacy is successful to the degree that is
strengthens the bishops in their vital communion with one another and
in their collegial service to the communion with one another and in
their collegial service to the communion of the whole people of God.
The author suggests that the papal could exercise this
mission more effectively today if it led the Church to restore such
ancient canons as those that gave a decisive voice to the local church
in the choice of its bishop and forbade the translation of bishops from
one see to another.

What
We Can Learn from the East
by Beatrice Bruteau
126 pp, PhP 50.00
Category: Spirituality
The
impetus for this book was a request from a group of Christian retreat
directors who wanted to know what they could learn from Eastern spiritual
traditions. Bruteau's response was a series of five easily accessible,
non-technical reflections on various aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism
offered generally as interpretations of Christian practices or texts.
Here, she has added two additional essays, "Gospel Zen" and
"The Immaculate Conception, Our Original Face." Both continue
the interpretive application of Eastern traditions to Christian texts.
The book's popular style is both a strength and a weakness; it is accessible
to a broad audience but generally scratches only the surface of the
Eastern traditions it introduces. Bruteau's interpretations of Christian
texts, however, are often insightful and may spark further exploration
and dialogue with the East. Steve Schroeder

The
Key Series
These
booklets do not deal with just the usual questions of authorship,
place, and time of writing, but rather present a more comprehensive
picture of the New Testament. The series uses an integrated approach
in presenting scholarly yet highly readable dissertations of the New
Testament writings. As a whole, the series is an invaluable resource-material
for all serious students of the scripture and theology. The general
editor of the series is Fr. Herman Hendrickx, cicm.

A
KEY TO THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
by Herman Hendrickx, cicm
64 pp. PhP 50.00
A detailed analysis
of Mt 28:16-20 will show that many elements found earlier in the gospel
are brought together in this final pericope. Two select passages are
also given ample discussions: the temptation narrative (Mt 4:1-11) and
the transfiguration narrative ( Mt 17: 1-8).

A
KEY TO THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
by Herman Hendrickx,
cicm
64 pp. PhP
50.00
Hendrickx
considers Lk 14:16-30 as the key not only to the Gospel but to the whole
of Luke and Acts. He shows that in this pericope can be found major
theological themes of both books: the work of the Spirit, the universality
of the gospel, the grace of God, and the rejection of Jesus.

A KEY TO THE GOSPEL OF MARK
by Herman Hendrickx,
cicm
56 pp.
PhP 50.00
Hendrickx reveals
here why Mark, who was in the past considered as a somewhat simple-minded
compiler of disagreeing traditions, is more and more being recognized
as a writer with considerable theological and literary skills. The Gospel
according to Mark is a story artistically composed by a truly creative
storyteller.

A KEY TO THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
by Niceta M. Vargas,
osa
56 pp.
PhP 50.00
Vargas
points out to John's prologue (Jn 1:1-18) as the key to the interpretation
of the whole Gospel. She then proceeds to explain how the first part,
Jn 1:1-13, with its theme of life and light, corresponds to the Book
of Signs (Jn 1:19;12:50) while the second part, Jn 1:14-18, with its
focus on grace and truth, is related to the Book of Glory (Jn 13:1;21:25).

The
beginning of the Acts is a continuation: the opening is really the middle

A KEY TO THE LETTER TO THE ROMANS
by M.Gemma Victorino,
pddm
68 pp. PhP
50.00
In
proposing Rom 3:21-31 as a possible key to understanding this letter
of Paul, the author keeps in mind the reality that as always, Paul's
way of theologizing and the text that comes out in the process are very
much conditioned by the situation of his audience as well as by his
very own situation.

A KEY TO THE FIRST
LETTER TO THE CORINTHIANS
by Herman Hendrickx, cicm
72 pp. PhP 50.00
Hendrickx contends
that the key to understanding the whole book lies in defining the real
problem besetting the Corinthian community at that time. Excellent reading
for Christian community leaders and members who are grappling today
with the same issues.

A KEY TO THE
SECOND LETTER TO THE CORINTHIANS
by Herman Hendrickx, cicm
76 pp. PhP
50.00
Paul's Second
Letter to the Corinthians is the most personal and also the most perplexing
of his letters. Although occasioned by the situation of a particular
first century Christian community, the passion of Paul's response still
has the power to stir the hearts of those who perceive the gallantry
of unaided struggle against misunderstanding and betrayal of which there
is also a good deal in all sectors of today's church.

A KEY TO
THE FIRST AND SECOND THESSALONIANS
by Most Rev. Crisostomo Yalung, d.d.
72 pp. PhP
50.00
Though 1 Thessalonians
does not reflect a conscious literary effort on Paul's part, we can
understand why the letter would have abiding literary value for later
generations of Christians. In Paul's absence, it approximates a permanent
record of the living voice of the apostle. The message of 2 Thessalonians
has a peculiarly contemporary cast in the light of numerous modern doomsday
preachers.

A KEY TO THE GALATIANS
by M. Gemma Victorino, pddm
56 pp. PhP 50.00
The
Letter to the Galatians is perhaps one of the most interesting piece
of Pauline literature. And the text on Gal 2:15-21 is considered by
many as one of the most significant passages in the whole letter. Different
versions of the bible generally agree that what Paul says here is his
concrete response to the actual problems addressed by the Letter.

It contains some
of the most sublime expositions of God_s mysterious plan for creation,
of Christ's role in this plan, and of the mystery of Christ's body,
the Church. At the same time, the Letter remains a puzzling text whose
authorship is debated, whose intended audience is uncertain and whose
place and function in the Pauline corpus is unclear.

A KEY
TO THE LETTER TO THE PHILIPPIANS
by Caroline Joy, R. Luz, rscj
52 pp. PhP 50.00
The
letter of Paul to the Philippians is one of the most popular epistles
in the New Testament. One reason for this could be the deeply personal
language used by Paul to describe his own life and situation. A second
reason could be the attention given to the Christ Hymn which does occupy
a central portion of the letter, and could indeed be the key to a deeperunderstanding
of the epistle.

THE PASTORAL LETTERS
by Colm McKeating
76 pp.
PhP 50.00
These
Letters on church organization and Christian life, are an important
record of how the gospel was handed on at a time of transition, by adapting
the life of the early church to the household codes of antiquity. Today,
with the aid of a new hermeneutics, the wisdom and realism of the Pastoral
Letters still provide a stimulating challenge to the church, which again
finds itself in a period of radical change.

THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS
by Paul Bernier,
sss

PhP 50.00
The
growing belief by many scholars that the Letter to the Hebrews may originally
not have been a Letter but a homily delivered orally is significant
as it affects the way we understand Hebrews. We must listen to it rather
than read it. In a detailed analysis, Bernier identifies Heb 10:19-39
as the key passage to the whole book.

KEY TO THE LETTER OF JAMES
by by Natividad Pagadut
72 pp. PhP 50.00
The
question of the poor is certainly high on the agenda of James as is
evident from the fact that it appears so early in the letter and returns
repeatedly in several chapters. However, other matters are given a good
deal of attention as well. But is there any plan in this letter? Some
critics believe that none exists outside the minds of commentators.
This booklet convincingly shows that this is not so.
