Priests for Tomorrow
By Bishop Fritz Lobinger

94 pp., PhP 125.00

What would parishes be like where in each of them three or as many as seven or even married, proven local leaders were ordained as priests? The question is best answered by giving concrete examples of various types of parishes and that is exactly what is being attempted here. The idea of ordaining groups of local leaders has previously been presented by the author who now examines, in some detail, the probable reactions in such parishes situated in different part of the Church. What would happen if, in each of these parishes, a team of 'community priests' or 'Corinthian priests' were ordained?

This book goes beyond earlier publications of the author in another aspect. It proposes 'parish clusters' as the easiest and safest starting point for such ordinations. In many parts of the Church, the shortage of priests has resulted in one priest having to serve a group of parishes within a diocese. This development of parish clusters is not welcomed by many Catholics who were accustomed to having their own parish priest. However, this arrangement offers the best - in some cases the only - answer to the insufficient number of priests. The rationale for suggesting parish clusters as the appropriate starting point for the ordination of teams of lay leaders is explained at length. The choice of starting with parish clusters will also allay the widespread fear that the introduction of ordained community leaders could get out of hand and lead to chaos in the church.
