A Dragon Not For the Killing

By Brendan Lovett, mssc
216 pp.
, Paperback, US $12.95, PhP189

The author's work takes Populorum Progressio's thought and intentions into the new millennium. One might say that we have here a theology of liberation in the "Lonerganian key". An imagination-altering and a mind-changing book and in this sense, a profoundly hopeful one.

The Author
Brendan Lovett is an Irish-born member of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. He obtained post-graduate studies in Linguistic Analysis and Approaches in Theology in Germany and held a Lonergan Research Fellowship in Boston College in 1991. His theological writings, inclusive of the present work, concentrate on the analysis of recent development as cultural process.

His other book published by Claretian is: It's Not Over Yet

All Saints

Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Out Time
By Robert Ellsberg
577 pages, PhP 499

Saints have typically been figures from the distant past, canonized for miraculous lives of perfection and self-denial. Ellsberg here redefines this stereotype in this diverse and substantial compendium of the lives of men and women, ancient and contemporary, who gave themselves completely to their vocations. Well-known saints, apostles, and martyrs take their place beside lesser-known figures (the woman with a flow of blood who touched Jesus' hem), theologians and philosophers (e.g., Martin Buber, Simone Weil, Kierkegaard), artists (Van Gogh, Mozart, J.S. Bach), literary figures (Dante, Tolstoy), social reformers (Gandhi, Schweitzer), and numerous others who do not fit into neat categories. A different figure is introduced for each day of the year to coincide with feast days or birth/death dates, and helpful biographical sources are provided. - From Library Journal

Becoming Local Church
By Fr. James H. Kroeger, MM
140 pp, PhP 149, US$ 7.95

The Asian Bishops have boldly stated: "If the Asian Churches
do not discover their own identity, they will have no future." This
challenge calls "on the part of the Churches for originality, creativity
and inventiveness, for boldness and courage." Yes, the Churches of Asia
must discover "a new way of being Church"!

In response to the Asian Bishops' statements, this book explores
five aspects of "becoming local church": history, theology,
evangelization, dialogue, and paschal reflections. In brief, it
investigates "what the Spirit is saying to/through the Churches of
Asia." Readers are also referred to another volume by the same author: The Future of the Asian Churches.

Catholic Ethicists on HIV/AIDS Prevention

352 pp., PhP 289

Rights:
Philippines

Edited by: James F. Keenan, S.J..
with Jon Fuller, Ed.
Lisa Sowle Cahill, Ed.
and Kevin Kelly

Thirty-seven internationally known moral theologians show how Roman Catholic moral traditions can mediate the clash of values in HIV prevention and treatment.

In the first part of this thought-provoking book, moral theologians address the worldwide AIDS pandemic and illustrate the complexity of HIV prevention and treatment within the context of local issues and cultural concerns in twenty-six cases from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America.

In the second part, essays by well-known theologians hone in on the fundamental moral issues involved and demonstrate how the Roman Catholic tradition can help in constructively mediating the moral conundrum of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

A concluding essay by Kevin Kelly focuses on the challenges AIDS presents to moral theology at the beginning of the new millennium.

Catholicism in the Third Millennium

Thomas P. Rausch, S.J.; Focus Questions and Glossary by Catherine E. Clifford
304 pp., Paperback, PhP 299.00

What is Catholicism? And where is the Catholic Church headed in the third millennium? These two questions provide the structure for Thomas Rausch’s Catholicism in the Third Millennium. Here Rausch combines a faithful presentation of the tradition with a critical theological reflection and interpretation of where the Church is today and where it might be moving.

Catholicism in the Third Millennium offers an appreciation of the forces and movements that have shaped, and continue to influence, the ongoing change and development of Roman Catholicism. Chief among these is the influence of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) in reshaping Catholicism.

This revised edition includes updated text from Rausch’s Catholicism at the Dawn of the Third Millennium particularly the final chapter on “The Unfinished Agenda” of Vatican II. Each chapter concludes with focus questions developed by Catherine E. Clifford of St. Paul’s University, Ottawa. This experience of guided reading provides readers with a broad survey of Roman Catholic faith and practice in its contemporary context.

Dare to Struggle, Be Not Afraid
The 'Theology of Struggle' in the Philippines
By Anne Harris

240 pp., Paperback, PhP 299.00, US $12.95

In 1998, describing the theology emerging from the Philippines, Karl Gaspar wrote: "Do not look for a book. There isn't one; and none may be written soon". He then qualified the statement, "this new theology has been communicated in another language" and if one is to understand the theology of struggle one needs to look at "culture and liturgy" (Gaspar, 1988:45).

This book delves into this very topic - the theology of struggle. It plunges far deeper than theological reflections and oral representations available. It goes to the source of what became known as the theology of struggle - it goes to the very people themselves. It journeys with these progressive Christians as they discover a new way of life, a new way of 'being' church. It travels with them from early days of transformation, watches as some lose their all-important Christian identity, reports the moment when they claim their place in Philippine history, and remains with those who continue to struggle to this day. It reports crucial incidents, reveals the dangers and frustrations faced, but never loses hope.

Indeed, this is not a theological text, despite its name. It is a book about a courageous group of men and women - church people from diverse backgrounds - who joined the revolutionary struggle in the Philippines.

Dr. Anne Harris is a lecturer in Religious Studies at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Western Australia. Her interest in this field was ignited by a visit to Chile in 1983-4, where she stayed with Mercy Sisters engaged in a work with the poor and oppressed. Participating in protest actions along with walking with the poor introduced her to Liberation Theology, an interest that became more academic once she returned home. In 1986, she spent five weeks in the Philippines and witnessed the euphoria of the early Aquino days. Perceiving those she met and spent time with as courageous and selfless people, she returned to the Philippines to complete formal research in 1995-6, again in 1998. This led to this book, where she has attempted to put together the diverse pieces of what is essentially a powerful social and religious movement - the theology of struggle.

Dialogue

Resource Manual for Catholics in Asia

From Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs
FABC
192 pp. US$ 18.95, PhP249

One can assume that these members of the faithful have little knowledge about the Church's teachings and that they probably have never heard of Nostra Aetate, let alone understand or subscribe to its teachings. In fact, even some of our own priests and other pastoral leaders are not familiar with documents such as Dialogue and Mission or with the FABC's Theology of Harmony. Hence, we have to admit that there is indeed a gap between what the FABC and the Church in Asia is saying about interreligious dialogue and what is actually happening at the grassroots levels.

The publication of this Resource Manual, therefore, attempts to address this issue and hopefully, will play a small role in bridging the gap between the theory and the practice. Specifically, the Resource Manual contains all sorts of materials which could be used for the education and formation of persons for interreligious dialogue.

MARTYR for Peace
MARTYR FOR THE FAITH

the crosses still stand in basilan

a journey with the kidnap victims
64pp., US $6.95, PhP125

As a tribute to Fr. Rhoel and his companions, the Claretian Missionaries decided to come up with this booklet to keep their memories alive, hoping that their stories will inspire us to live our faith to the full and to continuously work for peace and justice.

This booklet contains meditative narrations prepared by Fr. Rhoel's Claretian brothers. They know him personally; they have lived and worked with him. This shared experience with Fr. Rhoel and his companions has allowed the writers to narrate the events with deep sensitivity...

The accounts about the fatal trek of the kidnap victims are framed within the Lord's Way of the Cross. Fourteen recollections - corresponding to the fourteen stations - are based on the experiences of the victims. It is the story of Jesus re-enacted today in the life of his disciples. Each account is followed by guide questions for reflection and a short prayer. This sequence is a way to involve the readers in an active search for the deeper meaning of the events and their implications to their faith-life and mission. So this booklet is not only the stories of the victims but also a call, a challenge to each one of us, disciples of Jesus, to bear witness to Him even if it means death.

This booklet has been translated to German language.
