The Power of Prayer around the World

Glenn Mosley and Joanna Hill
112 pp, PhP 135.00

Universally, the power of prayer has been recognized by many cultures for immeasurable time. Whether it be a part of a formal service recited with a congregation of worshipers or an individual, quiet moment, prayer is part of the lives of people from a variety of religions.

There seems to be an innate urge among humanity to connect with a higher source of energy and love when we need guidance or direction, and this is called prayer. By reading the prayers from religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, from cultures in Africa, India, Egypt, and China, we begin to share the sense of a common experience.

The deepest inner feelings and longings are similar—concern for family, assistance in healing, a longing for peace, or a wish for greater wisdom. For some people, prayer can be thought of as a way to ask for specific goals or special favors. This type of prayer may or may not be effective. Another type of prayer exists when all selfish desire is put aside and we feel ourselves in communion with God. At this point, our greatest wish is that God’s will be done.

There may be pressing concerns that make us turn our sights upward, but we learn to let go of the end result. At this point, prayer becomes a way of opening up to the universal, loving, creative energy that exists and is far greater than any person could imagine. This is the source of miracles, of faith and unconditional love. Prayer then becomes more than a means to an end; it becomes a state of humility and of awe. It can exist whether we are washing the floor or composing a symphony. Prayer is communion with the Divine, a universal loving creative force that exists in a variety of ways for people around the world.

This book brings together an inspirational collection of prayer suitable for all ages and traditions. In addition, it offers insight and guidance about the nature of prayer that will be useful for the serious seeker.

Highlights

• An inspirational collection of prayers from around the world
• A beautiful gift book celebrating the universality of the human experience
• An explanation of what prayer is and how it works

Words of Common Sense for Mind, Body, and Soul
Brother David Steindl-Rast Foreword by Thomas Moore
92 pp, PhP 145.00

We are surrounded by treasures so obvious we cannot see them. These treasures are the words of common sense passed through the ages throughout many cultures in the form of maxims, proverbs, and wise sayings. They may be taken for granted but, upon examination, it is clear how much wisdom they contain.

Brother David Steindl-Rast takes us on a journey of discovery by identifying the wonder of the ordinary found in common sense. In a humble and insightful way he illuminates the teachings that are passed from one generation to the next. These words of common sense bring to light the important virtues and ethics that are valued by human beings worldwide. “When you drink from a stream, remember the spring,” says a wise Chinese proverb that evokes thanksgiving and reflection. “A contented heart is a continual feast” directs a person to look within for their happiness rather than without.

There are attitudes and actions that hinder a person from using their innate common sense or from being able to learn from others. The negative or destructive states that impede one’s growth are explained, as well as steps one can take toward cultivating wisdom within.

By becoming aware of the proverbs of the world and by honoring the thread of human experience as expressed in wise sayings, the reader becomes transported to a feeling of connection with other religions and cultures. Inspiring and optimistic, Words of Common Sense helps to make a rewarding life possible within the trials of everyday living as one discovers that within the ordinary can be found the keys to living a life of meaning. When we look to the words of common sense that are around us, we can begin to make sense of things for ourselves. These words can guide, illuminate, and inspire us.

Highlights

• An inspirational and accessible explanation of the power of maxims and proverbs
• Guidance toward leading a life of meaning and purpose
• A look at various religious and cultural approaches to wisdom, as passed on through the ages

"Rarely am I so pleased with a book and feel its raw power. Brother David has not written this overnight. He has brought a lifetime of reflection and experience to a theme that has infinitely more importance and practically than it appears to have. He has by-passed the more familiar route of artificial complexity, finding his way instead through the more common way that is more subtle and profound. He describes a way to think and feel with our fellow beings and discover solutions to our problem that are deeply in tune with our humanity."

- From the introduction by Thomas Moore,
Author of Care of the Soul

Brother David Steindl-Rast, O.S.B., was born in Vienna, Austria in 1926. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1952 and moved to the United States. In 1953 he joined a Benedictine monastery in the Finger Lakes area of New York where he still lives today as a senior member. Brother David has been a contributor for several volumes and periodicals including the Encyclopedia Americana and New Age Journal. His many books include Gratefulness: The Heart of Prayer, A Listening Heart, and The Music of Silence, which was co-written with Sharon Lebell, as well as writing the introduction to Words of Gratitude for Mind, Body, and Soul, published in fall 2001 by Templeton Foundation Press.

Happiness is always a by-product.

People devote much time and energy to seeking happiness, but the sad fact is that we are often seeking ourselves. Actually, the happiest people are those who are working to give happiness to others. Happiness is not found by seeking it; it is a by-product of caring about other people.

Great heroes are humble.

Those great people who are among the most respected acknowledge that their greatness comes not from their personal self, but from a higher power working through them. The true meaning of humility is knowing that the personal self is a vehicle of a higher power.
