The von Balthasar Rader performs signal service, for it presents well-chosen, systematically arranged selections from the whole of the Balthasarian ouvre, in passages of from two to seven pages brimming with theological and spiritual nourishment. The Reader, prefaced by an excellent and helpful essay-portrait of the theologian and his work, will certainly introduce the Swiss theologian to a wider public in a format attractive and accessible. |

The impetus for this book was a request from a group of Christian retreat directors who wanted to know what they could learn from Eastern spiritual traditions. Bruteau's response was a series of five easily accessible, non-technical reflections on various aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism offered generally as interpretations of Christian practices or texts. Here, she has added two additional essays, "Gospel Zen" and "The Immaculate Conception, Our Original Face." Both continue the interpretive application of Eastern traditions to Christian texts. The book's popular style is both a strength and a weakness; it is accessible to a broad audience but generally scratches only the surface of the Eastern traditions it introduces. Bruteau's interpretations of Christian texts, however, are often insightful and may spark further exploration and dialogue with the East. Steve Schroeder |

More and more people are experiencing the actual presence of a loved one after his or her death. Here are 75 comforting true stories. Read these stories and these reflections in the spirit in which they were written, a spirit of kindness, realism, generosity and good will. Perhaps you will gain from them the gift that they offer - a renewed sense of faith, hope and love; a deeper conviction that this life is worth living today and forever, and a calm, uncomplicated belief that when this life draws to its natural close what awaits us is not oblivion or punishment but life in its fullness - a life beyond anything we can begin to imagine or hope for, but a life which we do catch glimpses of in our love and care for one another here and now." |

Some pray on their knees, others pray standing, still others don't pray at hall. Sometimes we'd like to get through to God on the phone, but it seems our line is always busy. God has a way to listen no matter how we communicate. Andrew Greeley speaks with God via computer at all times of the day and night. These conversations are a window to his soul, windows through which we can learn more about God, our neighbor and ourselves. Composed during 1993 and 1994, these prayers mirror contemporary events in the church and in the world, revealing the grace that runs through all of our lives. Windows: A Prayer Journal inspires and encourages us to pray in our own voices and in our own unique ways. A wonderful addition to any religion and spirituality collection. |

Barbara Fiand calls her fellow religious to a deeper awareness of the transformation of consciousness that is beckoning people everywhere. She invites them to let this transformation affect their structures and shape their priorities. She asks questions and raises issues often ignored and long overdue: celibacy and the meaning of intimacy, what membership means and how it can be expanded, the welcoming of diversity, the need of the feminine for wholeness and health, the fear of death and denial of new life. |
