A Short Dictionary of the Psalms helps Christians who pray the psalms to return to the sources of these ancient inspired texts and understand them better and thus to participate more fully in this great school of prayer and the interior life that the Church has received from Israel.
A Woman Reads the Gospel of Luke is a woman's view of possible ways of reading the Gospel of Luke. In Luke's text scholars find worldviews reflecting the experience and importance of women in first-century Christian communities, since Luke, more than others, seems to have been influenced by women and gives women importance in his Gospel.
2000 Catholic Press Association Award Winner! The Collegeville Atlas of the Bible offers those with an interest in their historical and religious heritage a guided tour through the Bible. It describes the stories and events of the Bible and places them in their historical and geographical context. Fabulous 3-D cutaways, maps, and ground plans, all based on the latest historical evidence, enhance the comprehensive text and bring the dramatic events of the Old and New Testaments to life in glorious detail. In The Lord's Song in a Foreign Land, Father Wahl focuses on fifty of the most widely used psalms for Morning and Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. Using the Grail translation for the Psalms, he provides a reflection for each day of a four-week cycle, examining how a particular psalm can serve as a reference for prayer. For the remaining psalms, he offers a prayer based on the biblical reading, comparing individuals' experience to that of Israel. The text of the psalm is included.
The Collegeville Pastoral Dictionary of Biblical Theology distills the best of biblical scholarship and pastoral theology and presents it in clear and concise articles for the use of those in ministry. The dictionary is primarily (although not exclusively) pastoral, bringing to priests, religious, teachers, and educated laity a deeper understanding of the Bible and its central place in the life of the Church. Catholics read the biblical Word in the context of the Church's ongoing life and teaching. The Church, under the guidance of the Spirit, helps ensure that the biblical message is authentically interpreted and understood. At the same time, the Bible both nourishes and challenges the Church to be receptive to its message and guided by it. Thus Scripture and theology are bound together; it is their joint message that must be put into pastoral practice. This dictionary has been created to help chart that course. Four types of articles comprise the dictionary: introductory articles, major articles, secondary articles, and brief entries.
A chart of biblical history and a map of biblical lands are printed on the inside covers of the volume. With more than 500 insightful and instructive entries, this practical pastoral dictionary will be the one resource you'll need for preaching and liturgy preparation, classroom teaching and learning, and Bible study and reflection.
Sacra Pagina is a multi-volume commentary on the books of the New Testament. The expression "Sacra Pagina" ("Sacred Page") originally referred to the text of Scripture. In the Middle Ages it also described the study of Scripture to which the interpreter brought the tools of grammar, rhetoric, dialectic, and philosophy. This series presents fresh translations and modern expositions of all
the books of the New Testament. Written by an international team of Catholic
biblical scholars, it is intended for biblical professionals, graduate
students, theologians, clergy, and religious educators. The volumes present
basic introductory information and close exposition, with each author
adopting a specific methodology while maintaining a focus on the issues
raised by the New Testament compositions themselves.
Anyone seeking to unite the Living Word with the living world will be enlightened and satisfied-and also confused, and even surprised-by these reflections, for it is the author's goal to challenge readers to a life lived in the light of the Bible. Chapters touch on everything from the search for truth to the desire for hope; from human sexuality to the sacred signs of the sacraments; from self-contemplation to evangelization. Questions for personal and/or community reflection are part of each chapter.
Women in the Fourth Gospel appear at significant moments in the life of Jesus and seem to move his ministry forward. Certain passages in the stories involving women, however, tend to marginalize these women. How are readers to reconcile such divergent characterizations of women in the Fourth Gospel? Unlike most works that approach the topic of women in the Fourth Gospel from a historical-critical perspective, The Women in the Life of the Bridegroom visits it from a historical-literary perspective, illustrating how a first-century reader would have understood the characterizations of the women.
